New statistics from the U.S. Army show that fewer soldiers returning from war-related assignments are requiring transition services. According to the Army, the number of soldiers enrolled in services at a Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) has decreased 47 percent since February 2014.
Warrior Transition Units provide health care, rehabilitation, vocational training, housing and career services to soldiers who require at least six months of rehabilitation and medical treatment. The 25 units across the country that once served over 7,000 soldiers at a time now serve fewer than 3,700.
The Army will be closing the following 10 WTU centers across the country.
- Fort Gordon, GA
- Fort Knox, KY
- Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA
- Fort Leonard Wood, MO
- Fort Sill, OK
- Fort Polk, LA
- Fort Wainwright, AK
- Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK
- Fort Meade, MD
- Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA
Army officials assure servicemembers that soldiers and military families served by these facilities will still receive the care and transition assistance through the Warrior Care and Transition Program. Soldiers who would have attended one of these centers will be reassigned to the closest active center if they require WTU services.
